Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

14 Aug

Author: Robert Louis Stevenson

Genre: Horror/gothic/mystery/adult

We bought this book yesterday – and it was surprisingly short. Not even 90 pages long!

So I got it finished within an hour. I knew the main story and had seen the Veggie Tales (does that count?) but had never read the book – I enjoyed it, of course, but since I already knew the outcome, it wasn’t as thrilling as it might have been.

However, yes, it was fun, and it was clean (I think there were a couple swear words) and would recommend it for anyone looking for a short but mysterious and dark semi-horror read. Not that people often come up to me and say “Excuse me, do you have any recommendations for a short but mysterious and dark semi-horror book, please?”

Book Review: A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

Title: A Great and Terrible Beauty

Author: Libba Bray

Back Cover: None

My Review: This book was one of the most beautifully written books ever. It was a joy to look at, and to hold – the pages were deckled (made to look like hand-torn paper) and the descriptive style of the writing was luscious… but sadly, a few chapters into the book, I had to put it down. The girls formed a group they called “The Order” – basically turning themselves into sorceresses. NOT good. It was terribly hard to put down, but I did – and I would not recommend this series.

Amazing writing style and overall look and feel, but I’m giving it one out of five stars.

I just ordered ‘Dragon Rider’ by Cornelia Funke from Amazon.com! It’s shipping from the UK, so it should take 7-10 days to arrive here, but I’m very excited. I’m also really enjoying reading Jane Eyre for my book club, Literary Ladies. I like the Brontë style more than Austen, and just ordered a bunch of Brontë books from the library! More reviews coming soon!
